This is the podcast that jumpstarted my thinking about the concept of something being timeless. Cedric Charbit, the CEO of Balenciaga, was speaking about how Balenciaga somehow straddles the innovative and unexpected while also somehow being timeless? It was quite interesting as an idea. A majority of the podcast was discussing the meta verse and Demna's visions, ranging from video games to releasing old collections. But the idea of something being timeless really stuck with me. Timeless is different to classic. I think in this world at the moment there is a need for "timeless" because there is so much garbage being produced all the time. I want to create a new kind of timeless though, so I started defining timeless in my own way. I broke it down into three categories: Transformation, Universal-ness and Function. By transformation, I mean a combination of changing over time to keep up with whatever is happening, but the essence of what once was is still very much there, like the t-shirt for example. Universal-ness is not really a word, but I basically mean that timeless pieces sort of have to involve everyone. Something must be widely recognised in someway. Everyone could mean a whole country, the world or maybe just a ton of fashion snobs. Either way, I think for something to be considered timeless, lots of people must agree. The last category, function, is maybe the most important and truthful. Functional pieces will always last and go beyond time and trends. No matter what style is in at the moment, a jumper will still keep you warm. I think my concept will be reinventing timelessness through these categories. I also will bring in the ecological mindset I usually bring, but I really want to focus on repair and mending, and how we can extend the lives of our garments. So kind of a new form of timeless that does not really mean classic silhouettes.
