F.C. PROJECT 3: ON SET

1. DO YOU HAVE ANY EXPERIENCE WITH SET DESIGN? WAS THIS EXPERIENCE ANY DIFFERENT?

I have created a miniature set before of a living room and I used to be obsessed with making cardboard Barbie houses and mansions when I was younger. The main difference was this was access to materials. All of the miniature sets I have built previously have been out of cardboard, which was then covered in fabric swatches and colourful paper. This time, I decided to utilise the workshops. I decided to just look in each workshop in the scrap bins and decide what material to use from there. I found a lot of acrylic plastic clear scraps so I decided to use those for my set. The acrylic is so beautiful and satisfying as a material, but I really do not want to add more plastic, so using the scraps was a happy compromise.

2. WAS YOUR SET DESIGN SUCCESSFUL? DID YOU UTLISE TODAY EFFECTIVELY?

I absolutely love the set I created. My first time in the workshop was so fun. I felt really cool cutting pieces of acrylic on the cutting machines wearing the giant goggles they give you. By using the scrap acrylic, I was very constricted with the size of the pieces which meant I had to work within these tiny plastic bits. Cutting them was quite easy, so I decided to make really rough spiky shapes. I then added in slots so the pieces could randomly fit together. This worked out amazingly even if it was a bit precarious. The final product was way better than I had envisaged and I was so happy with the fact I was able to create a polished looking set using scrap acrylic. It would be great to see how extreme I could make my design with bigger pieces, but I really hate the idea of buying a whole sheet of acrylic. Texture wise, I am so obsessed with my set. The scraps I used are clear, so it looks amazing with different lighting. The spikes are also very “me” and the shoe atop the spikes is my favourite shoe, so for me it is just a perfect outcome.

3. HOW WILL YOU IMPROVE AND DEVELOP YOUR SET?

To develop my set further I think changing scale might be really interesting. I would like to see the shoe stand with much larger spikes slotted together. It could be cool as well to try glueing the stand so it is stronger. I also really need to take better photos of the stand because it was hard to capture it in class. The way the pieces slot together has a lot of potential. It would be interesting if these stands could be sold as puzzle type stands, then the buyer can assemble it however they choose. The pieces could come in all types of shapes and textures. It could be an amazing product. I might try and make a mockup design for the actual stand and then the packaging.
