I have used this book as a reference many times and once again it is relevant. The books structure is my favourite kind of book. It contains photo grids, answers to survey questions, and a variety of short essays, stories and all other forms of writing. The title, Women in Clothes, is self explanatory; this book addresses everything and anything to do with women and clothing. I reference this book once again because it connects women from al around the world through body adornment and the meaning behind ways of dressing. It answers all the questions of how clothing makes us feel, how clothing makes others feel, the disastrous state of the fashion industry etc. A few years ago I conducted a survey inspired by this book within my school asking the question: "What does clothing mean to you?" I want to recreate and retry this survey for my text piece. This time, I want to focus more on the feeling of clothing: "How does clothing make you feel?" Of course I will explore other ways of framing this question, and I will reference this books survey questions as well to get some inspiration or other ways of conducting surveys. While the surveys are amazingly interesting to read, the images they are paired with are also so fascinating. For example, in the image above is a short text piece (not one of the surveys) and a grid of grey sweatshirts. The title of this grid is LYDIA BURKHALTER'S grey sweatshirts. The book has many other grids incredibly similar, with underwear, jeans, dresses and all other garments. It is such a simple format with a simple title, but the insight and inferences I can gain and make from this simplistic photo set is phenomenal. It is such an intimate way of showing what a person is like and their relationship to clothing. It really is a great way to explore people's comforts and discomforts, and with those, their insecurities and deepest feelings towards the body.
