To me, clothes really have no gender because I just wear what I like. In thinking about gender in clothing though, I thought back to this show, the Gucci Fall 2020 Menswear. This look specifically was my favourite and when I saw this I immediately went out and bought an ugly pilgrim dress and started wearing it with jeans. I find it really interesting that this show was specifically marketed as "Menswear", instead of a gender fluid or unisex collection even though there is a lot of gender duality within this collection. Goom Heo's brand is quite similar because although her clothes are basically unisex and are sometimes more "feminine" than masculine, she still described herself as a unisex brand, and said she makes unisex clothing. Within this project it is key we show that gender duality, but I wonder about marketing clothes with a gender. I do not disagree with clothing having genders, I personally do not think my clothing has a gender, but other people feel validated through wearing clothing specifically marketed towards them. While this Gucci look is really cool and I love the way they have styled this dress, it makes me think about how gender expression can also be slightly exploited in the name of "breaking stereotypes". It is also interesting to use a dress, which is deemed as one of the most female and feminine pieces of clothing. I think marketing without gender in mind can work for different purposes, but sometimes we need genders to be on labels because it helps people who do care about what "sex" their clothing might be. Personally, clothing will never have a gender because I just do not care. But, it will be interesting to see the gender duality within Goom's looks and how we can push that in a few ways. I like the concept of gender duality through gender neutrality. Exploring everything on the gender spectrum through looks that are "genderless".
